Intention and Goal

The theme building and environment has become one of the most important topics regarding the future of building also in India. It is deemed essential in the rapidly growing cities with large, mostly underdeveloped infrastructure, as well as in developed regions, which are often elaborately constructed, yet incorporate no sustainable concepts which value the environment. The goal, to establish and reinforce sustainable and holistically considered standards of practice, requires necessary changes to the whole planning and building process.

The state recognized "Master of Science" degree will provide you with multiple career opportunities and promotion prospects, as an employee or as an independent practitioner.

Professional Fields of Work

Specialists are increasingly sought after in both the commercial and public environments, for the promotion of large building projects, as well as in the private sector, for smaller development requests. The areas of work range from master planning of cities and regional developments, to building design and the application of materials.

Study reports and impression

Sean Brunke, South Africa

I would like to start this testimonial thanking everyone at Hochschule Wismar that made my international studies possible. It has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life. So thanks for making it a reality and for accepting me into the course.

The experience I have had whilst studying my Masters at Hochschule Wismar has been one of the best in my life. From the moment I met Milesa Jevtic, the course co – ordinator, and Martin Wollensak, the head of the department, I have felt like a part of a family.

All of the accommodation we stayed in, the excursions organized, the places and buildings we have seen, the professionals we have been lucky enough to meet, the parties we went to, the food we ate and the beers we drank, EVERYTHING about this course has been a remarkable and once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The relevant and uniquely ground-breaking course work, as well as the exposure to revolutionary lecture topics and innovative professors has been absolutely mind blowing! I feel that the experience of this master’s course has made me a better architect and a specialist in the field of sustainable design and urban ecology. But most importantly, I leave Germany with an altered, well-rounded and insightful perspective on Architecture and Urban Design. As a professional I am now more focused on sustainability and sustainable design.
Not only has the course changed me professionally for the better, it has also allowed me to make some amazing friends in Germany, Spain, Turkey, Mexico, Costa Rica, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, but to name a few. The people I have had the honour of studying with will remain my friends for rest of my life.
I highly recommend this course to anyone with a keen interest in sustainability and a passion for innovation.

On the following pages you can read about the reason why our students decided for the international master's programme Green Architecture.

Emin Onur Demircan, Russia

1. Why did you decide to study the master’s programme Green Architecture?
My first intention for having a master´s degree was improving my career but then it has become my first aim to have knowledge in sustainable and environmental friendly development in architecture after what was thought in Hochschule Wismar and what I saw in different cities of Germany.

2. What are the benefits you experienced during the study, professionally and personally?
This study has added a step further in my professional knowledge, and opened my view about how architecture is applied and done in Europe, also encouraged me to deep in sustainability in Architecture with guidelines and rules.

3. What makes this study programme unique?
Flexibility in studying, chances in going on in academic way, studying together with academicians and professionals from different cultures and countries make this study unique and challengeable.

4. How do you like the study concept, self-directed study combined with on campus seminars (workshop weeks, excursions)?
I wish the study program would / could be more participated in academic environment (campus, university, library) to benefit from these sources more and efficiently.

5. How do you deal about the exchange and cooperation with your study colleagues and lecturers?
While on excursion or workshop weeks, it is easier to benefit from lecturers face to face, but it is more difficult and less efficient via e-mail or skype because of missing in attendance, connection problems, rare meetings and limited time. While trying to communicate with friends and lecturers, whatsapp and skype are sometimes used but e-mails are used so often and more efficiently.

During this master, I experienced the opportunity to be part of a group of different countries and cultures, personally I think that part of an international master is to interact and learn from experiences of other people. Professionally, I think this study is 100% complete with the high standards of every professor and the knowledge of each one in the different themes that were addressed.

3. What makes this study programme unique?
The opportunity to visit and experienced different cities and get to know it from local people in every field that was presented in each city.

4. How do you like the study concept, self-directed study combined with on campus seminars (workshop weeks, excursions)?
The campus seminars and excursions were my favorite part, I think these should be at least 2 weeks minimum. The excursions are a very practical way to understand the themes and to visualize it from a better point of view, so the self-directed study become easier.

5. How do you deal about the exchange and cooperation with your study colleagues and lecturers?
We made a very multicultural and nice group of almost every continent, the idea to know a little bit more of different countries and languages were a vital part in this master. The lecturers once again were exceptional, the idea of having people with such a level of knowledge in every field, makes this master a very high standard study programme.

Through online conferences, emails, and social networks, living in a connected world makes it possible for this programme to be a success. It is just a matter of finding a time of the day that will work for everyone.

Adriana Ochoa Rodríguez, Mexico

1. Why did you decide to study the master’s programme Architecture and Environment?
This programme caught my attention because of the urban design specialisation, I liked the idea of visiting a different city each semester and being able to work while studying.

2. What are the benefits you experienced during the study, professionally and personally?
Professionally, I found a job that allows me to work with people that share my ideas on sustainable urban design, where I am involved in projects that have a real impact on the city and the environment . Personally, it helped me make changes in my lifestyle that improve my relationship with the environment, it also gave me bases to reach other people with these eco-friendly concepts to change their lifestyles as well.

3. What makes this study programme unique?
Choosing your speciality for the final semesters, the professors have a very deep understanding and experience on their areas of knowledge and they give their best when transmitting it to us, visiting important cities of Germany and the efforts the country is doing to improve their cities, getting to know people from different countries that share your interests and ideas.

4. How do you like the study concept, self-directed study combined with on campus seminars (workshop weeks, excursions)?
This concept is very helpful when you combine work and study, it permitted me to learn at my own pace. But at the same time, it is very difficult to find time to work and to do it without any pressure from teachers. The workshops and excursions are the best part of the semesters, I enjoyed and learned a lot these weeks. Being able to work directly with the teachers is great. Also looking at the theory you learned coming to life, and seeing how people use it and live it, how it really works is the best way to learn. They were very demanding and intense, but the experiences you get are worth the effort.

5. How do you deal with the exchange and cooperation with your study colleagues and lecturers?
The cooperation with my colleagues was hard. It is difficult to work with people living in different time zones and different work schedules, specially for design assignments. I am very used to working in teams but in a normal situation we can talk directly and sketch together, these is very important for me in the design process and was something we could not do in long distance calls. It was the biggest challenge in my case. In the theoretic parts of our assignments cooperation was a lot easier.
With the lecturers it was also difficult, specially in the first semesters. We had two or three meetings during the semester and I felt I was on my own when doing the projects. I would have liked to have more meetings, not only to talk about the assignments, but also to discuss theory or examples of what we were studying. Maybe it would have also been helpful to have shirt assignments, reading some chapters of the books we received and discussing them together or searching a certain topic on line and talking about it together, these sort of things would have improved the results of our projects. In my opinion, the last semester worked a lot better because we had more meetings and closer contact with the lecturers.
